EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS
A good Web site is never doneit should evolve over time, in phases, to suit the changing needs of its users. Therefore, the development process is fairly fluiddepending on the scope, budget, and goals of the current phase, a project phase may take a few days or several months to complete, and each stage of the production will have a uniquely corresponding complexity.
Regardless of the complexity, these basic guidelines outline the development process:
- Discovery
- Research the client, its competitors, and its industry
- Identify the audiences and their needs
- Determine site requirements
- Define a conceptual model
- Outline the information that the site will contain
- Design the user’s path through the site
- Design
- Work with designers to establish the site’s visual design (look and feel)
- Work with the client to refine the navigation and visual design
- Inventory the content needed to fulfill the project’s goals
- Collect and/or develop the content
- Build and test a prototype
- Finalize the navigation and visual design
- Production
- QA (code and content freeze)
- Test the site on the targeted browser and platform combinations
- Fix bugs
- Create a site styleguide
- Completion and Launch
- Deliver the Web site and styleguide
- Follow-up as needed to address unforeseeable transition issues
Again, the needs of the project dictate the complexity of development, but the ultimate goal, regardless of the budget, is to create a Web site that meets the needs of the users.
